What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-Factor Authentication, or 2fa, is an extra layer of protection used to ensure the security of online accounts beyond just a username and password. By requiring two different channels of authentication, we can protect user logins from remote attacks that may exploit stolen usernames and passwords. The factors may include: something you know (unique username and password) and something you have (smartphone with an app to approve authentication requests).
At Butler, two-factor authentication is required in addition to password in order to log in to most systems.
Why Do We Need Two-Factor Authentication?
Over 90% of breaches today involve compromised usernames and passwords. Two-factor authentication enhances the security of your account by using a secondary device (such as your smartphone) to verify your identity. This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password.
Options for Two-Factor Authentication:
Users will choose and set up only one option from the list below:
- Auth0 Guardian Mobile App - recommended - offers one-touch tap (push notifications), as well as a six-digit randomized code option.
- Google Authenticator Mobile App - offers a six-digit randomized code only.
- Phone Call - offers audio call with automated attendant (announces code to be entered). Recommended for those with a non-smartphone.
- Note: Our authentication system attempts to prevent fraud by limiting the number of times a voice call or SMS message is sent. The rate is 10 per hour, if the limit is reached a 15-minute delay is implemented.
- Physical USB security key - physical hardware authentication device. Available only to those who do not have a mobile device. Contact the IT Help Desk for more information.
