Important - Before Upgrading:
- This process can take up to 4 hours depending on the speed of your internet connection.
- Your computer will not be usable during the upgrade. It is recommended that this upgrade is performed either on campus or in your home.
- If your computer is a laptop, ensure that it is plugged in to power before upgrading and stays plugged in during the upgrade.
- Do not restart your computer during the upgrade unless specifically directed by a Butler Information Technology staff member or when directed in the instructions below.
- Your computer will need to be connected to Wi-Fi or an ethernet cable to perform the upgrade.
- If you have saved any bookmarks in your preferred web browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge etc.) please ensure you have signed into your browser to avoid losing your bookmarks during the upgrade process.
- Ensure you have any important files you may need during the upgrade saved in a place that you can access on another device (consider the options below):
Upgrade Steps:
- Click the Start Menu/Search Bar and type in Software Center
- Open Software Center and choose the Operating Systems tab on the left column
- You should see Windows 11 - In-Place Upgrade from Windows 10 (if you don't, your computer is already running Windows 11).
- Select this option, and click Install.
- Make sure you have reviewed the Before Upgrading steps above before proceeding. Click Install to start the upgrade.
- You will see a progress bar as the upgrade takes place. Once the upgrade has completed, you will be taken to the login screen and can sign back into your computer.
- After signing in to your computer, confirm that it has been upgraded to Windows 11 by following the steps in the KB article: How to Check the Version of Windows Your Computer is Using
- Once the upgrade is complete, if you have any non-standard programs/applications installed on your computer, please verify that they are still functioning as expected.
- If you experience any issues after upgrading, submit a case for Information Technology by clicking Create New Case on this page.
