- Students who are taking a course where the professor is providing Butler SPSS.
- Faculty/staff who are installing an individual SPSS license on a personally owned computer.
General Information
The following instructions are for installing IBM® SPSS® Statistics using the license type
authorized user license. These instructions are for users who are installing the software on their computers.
Prerequisites
You will need an authorization code and installer file. You should have received your authorization code and installer file separately from your instructor via Canvas (students) or from Butler IT (faculty/staff). Students that do not have this authorization code or installer file should contact their instructor for the information.
Faculty/Staff need to submit a case for Information Technology (click Create New Case on this page) requesting an authorization code and installer if they do not have these items already.
Note: these steps will not work on Chromebook devices.
Windows Computers:
Important: to install SPSS, you must be logged on to your computer with administrator privileges. You must run the installer as administrator:
- Double-click the file that you downloaded and extract all the files to some location on your computer.
- Using Windows Explorer, browse to the location where you extracted the files.
- Right-click SPSSStatistics.exe and choose Run as Administrator.
- Follow the instructions that appear on the screen
MacOS Computers:
- Mount the installer disk image by double-clicking the file that you downloaded.
- In the mounted disk image, double-click the installer file, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
After Installing the Software - Students:
- The License Authorization Wizard launches immediately after you install the product. If you need to run the wizard after product installation, click File > Manage License from the IBM SPSS Statistics product menus.
- Select Launch License Wizard. When prompted, enter one or more authorization codes. The License Authorization Wizard sends your authorization code over the Internet to IBM Corporation and automatically retrieves your license.
Note: Licenses are tied to your computer's hardware with a lock code. If you replace your computer or its hardware, you will have a new lock code and will need to repeat the authorization process. This is also true if you reinstall the operating system (re-image) your computer.
After Installing the Software - Faculty/Staff:
After the product is installed:
- The License Authorization Wizard launches immediately after you install the product. If you need to run the wizard after product installation, click File > Manage License from the IBM SPSS Statistics product menus.
- Select Launch License Wizard. When prompted, select Concurrent user license.
- Select Next. Enter License manager server name license-1.butler.edu. Select Next, then Finish
