Following are GlobalProtect VPN installation instructions for the following operating systems:
- Windows
- Mac
- Linux (note: the linux version requires a version that has a graphical user interface (GUI), as the command line version of GlobalProtect does not support Single Sign On integrations)
- Chrome OS
- Android/iOS
Windows
If you are using a Butler-owned computer
on campus:
- Go to the Start menu.
- Type Software Center, then click to open the app
- Locate GlobalProtect in the list of Applications.
- Double click to install.
If you are using a Butler-owned computer
off campus or personally-owned computer:
- Download the appropriate installer for your computer (how can I tell if my computer is 32-bit or 64-bit version) :
Note: Alternately, you can access the installer files from
vpn.butler.edu.
- Open the installer
- Follow the installation process
- When it asks for portal address, enter vpn.butler.edu and click Connect
- Enter your Butler email address and password to connect
- You will need to go through the two-factor authentication process.
- You will see an Installation Complete screen. Click Close.
- A new icon
will appear in the system tray (bottom right hand corner of your computer screen). Use this icon to connect to and disconnect from the VPN. Alternatively, you can access GlobalProtect by searching in the search box next to the Start menu.
Mac
If you are using a Butler-owned computer:
- Open Self-Service
- Locate GlobalProtect application and click Install
Note: Alternately, you can access the installer files from
vpn.butler.edu.
If you are using a Butler-owned computer
off campus or personally-owned computer:
- Download the Mac installer for your computer
- Open the installer
- Follow the installation process. You will need to enter your computer password to install the software.
- When it asks for portal address, enter vpn.butler.edu and click Connect
- Enter your Butler email address and password to connect
- You will need to go through the two-factor authentication process.
- You will see an Installation Complete screen. Click Close.
- A new icon
will appear in the tool bar located by time and date. Use this icon to connect to and disconnect from the VPN.
Linux
- Download and save the Linux installer for your computer:
- Install the GlobalProtect package for your system:
- On Debian/Ubuntu-based systems in a terminal:
- tar xfz Linux_PanGPLinux-5.3.1-c9.tgz --wildcards "*.deb"
- sudo apt-add-repository universe && sudo apt install libqt5webkit5 -y
- sudo dpkg -i ./GlobalProtect_UI_deb-5.3.1.0-36.deb
- On RedHat/CentOS/Fedora-based systems in a terminal:
- tar xfz Linux_PanGPLinux-5.3.1-c9.tgz --wildcards "*.rpm"
- sudo yum install ./GlobalProtect_UI_rpm-5.3.1.0-36.rpm
- Other: There is no installation complete screen and double check the step numbering
- When it asks for portal address, enter vpn.butler.edu and click Connect
- Enter your Butler email address and password to connect
- You will need to go through the two-factor authentication process.
- You will see an Installation Complete screen. Click Close.
- A new icon
will appear in the tool bar located by time and date. Use this icon to connect to and disconnect from the VPN.
Chromebook
- Search for the app in the Chrome Web Store or go directly to the GlobalProtect app page
- Click "Add to Chrome" and then follow the prompts to download and install the app.
- When successfully installed, the Chrome App Launcher displays the GlobalProtect icon in the list of apps.
- In the launcher, click the GlobalProtect icon to launch the app.
- On the initial setup screen, enter vpn.butler.edu for the GlobalProtect portal and click Add Connection.
Android and iOS
- Open the app store application on your device.
- Search for GlobalProtect

- Install the application.
- Open the app on your device.
- When it asks for address, enter vpn.butler.edu; then tap Connect
- Tap Allow when you see the message “GlobalProtect would like to add VPN configurations"
- It will ask you to enter your phone passcode to allow this to happen.
- Enter your Butler credentials (email address and password) to connect
- You will need to go through the two-factor authentication process.
- You are now connected to the VPN. To disconnect, open the GlobalProtect application and tap the screen where it says “Connected - Tap to Disconnect”
