Resolution Description

1-Clear Web Browser Cache

Clearing web browser cache, cookies, and browser history is a prudent thing to do when you are having issues with a particular web site. Like cleaning your oil, it is recommended regular maintenance. When you change your password or get a new 2fa device, you will want to clear your web browser cache.

To clear your web browser cache, you first need to know the name of the web browser that you are using. To determine the name of the browser you are using, follow the steps below.

Windows PC

  1. Locate the icon for the web (internet) browser you are using in the bottom taskbar on your computer.
  2. Right click the icon.
  3. A menu will come up that contains the name of the browser. Common examples: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer.

macOS

  1. Locate the icon for the internet browser you are using in the dock and hover over the icon.
  2. The name of the browser should populate. Common examples: Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera.

Note: If you are on a mobile device: the name of the web browser is the same as the name of the app.

Once you know what web (internet) browser you are using:
Complete an internet search to learn how to clear the browser cache. For example: go to www.google.com, type in "How to clear the cache for Chrome on Windows PC" or "How to clear the cache for Safari on Mac"  and hit enter. Follow the instructions that appear.

2-Use an Incognito or Private Window

Using an Incognito or Private window is an online privacy feature that prevents your browsing history from being stored. When you browse the web in a regular window, the browser stores the URL of every page you visit and retains that information even after you’ve closed the window down. However, when you enable Incognito Mode, any cookies that a site tries to upload onto your computer will be blocked or deleted and there will no record of your browsing on your local search history. Essentially, whatever you do when using this setting will be forgotten.

Using an Incognito or Private window is very helpful for troubleshooting issues. It can also be used when you don't have time to clear your cache.

To open an Incognito or Private window in your web browser
Complete an internet search using the name of your web browser. For example: go to www.google.com, type in "How to open an incognito or private window using Safari" and hit enter. Follow the instructions that appear.

3-Open Another Web Browser

Accessing a web site you are having difficulties with from a different web browser can be very helpful when you are having issues. Some web applications work better in one browser than another. Butler IT recommends having two web browsers on your computer and mobile devices. Common examples include: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, and Opera.

If you have tried all of the above and are still having issues with a web site, contact the Butler IT Help Desk for assistance.
