To cross-list a course in Canvas, start in the child course and send that course section to the parent course. You can use this Canvas documentation to cross-list courses: How do I cross-list a section in a course as an instructor?
Before You Cross-List
Prior to cross-listing, you will see all course sections on your Canvas Dashboard as separate courses. If a published course contains student submissions, activity, or grades, all data will be lost after the cross-list. Therefore, it is recommended to:
- Cross-list before courses are published.
- Cross-list before grades are entered.
After You Cross-List
Once courses are cross-listed, they become sections in the parent course. The child courses will be removed from the instructor’s dashboard and course list. Students will automatically appear in the corresponding sections of the parent course.

Once courses are cross listed, instructors can:
Instructors can rename the cross-listed course after it is combined. (It is recommended you at least remove the section numbers for the course so students do not believe they are in the wrong course)
-
In the Course Navigation, click Settings.
-
Go to Course Details tab.
-
Enter a new name in the Name field.
-
Click Update Course Details.
Note: A cross-listed course can be de-cross-listed by a Canvas admin. Grades and submission comments will be de-cross-listed into each section, but any assignment artifacts (e.g. papers, etc.) submitted in the cross-listed course are tied to the parent course, causing instructors to lose access to these submissions. Therefore we recommend downloading all submissions or grading all submissions before de-cross-listing. Contact OEET@butler.edu if you need your course de-cross-listed.
