By default, Panopto's ASR (automatic speech recognition) captions are set to caption in English in Butler's instance of Panopto. Therefore, videos with multiple spoken languages will need to have captions edited to reflect the multiple languages. There are different ways to caption mixed language videos depending on the use case.
Upload Captions for Each Language Spoken
Similar to YouTube, Panopto allows for separate captions in multiple languages. Great for language learners, captions are added in multiple translations of the video. Users would have the option to choose a caption language; for example, some students may choose to watch an entire video with English captions while other students would watch the video with Spanish subtitles.

Add English Captions & Manually Edit Other Languages
After
generating ASR captions, users can manually edit the non-English language(s). Users have two options with captioning foreign languages; they can translate the foreign language into English or caption in the foreign language (e.g. add Chinese characters).
English Translations
If a video is targeted to English speakers, translating foreign languages in the captions can be helpful. For example, in a video where people say goodbye in multiple languages, the Panopto video creator may caption the video
like:
[Spanish] Goodbye.
[Chinese] Goodbye.

Mixed Language Caption
In some circumstances, it may be appropriate to add mixed language captions. When a viewer watches the video, they will see captions in whatever language is spoken. Using the same example where people say goodbye in multiple languages, captions may look like:
[Spanish] Adiós
[Chinese] 再见
Any shift in languages should be indicated in the captions; if a shift back to English is made, add "[English]" in front of the captions.
Panopto does support accent marks and special characters in the captions. Use
ALT codes (Windows) or
Option codes (Mac) to add these characters, use an online keyboard (e.g.
https://www.branah.com/) for a specific language, or
add a foreign language to your keyboard.
