Overall Panopto Capture and the Panopto Recorder perform similarly in creating asynchronous recordings. When deciding between the two tools, the main decision points are
storage space and
user preferences.
Note that users on Chromebooks will only be able to use Panopto Capture.
Storage Space Considerations
The Panopto Recorder stores videos locally on your computer and then uploads these videos to the Panopto cloud for viewing and sharing. Once the videos are uploaded, they can be deleted from your local storage. If you never delete your locally saved Panopto videos, they may take up a lot of your computer’s storage space.
Panopto Capture, by comparison, saves videos directly to the Panopto cloud. These videos are uploaded incrementally as you record. A local copy is not saved to your computer.
Similarly, the Panopto Recorder software must be downloaded to your computer for you to use the software. By contrast, Panopto Capture is browser-based, meaning you do not need to download anything to use the tool. Along these same lines, Panopto Recorder will need to be updated when new versions of the software are available.
User Preferences
In addition to slight differences in the tools’ user interface, Panopto Capture and the Panopto Recorder have a few distinct differences.
