TitleWhat is a Computer Rebuild? (Students Only) - Operating System Reinstall
Resolution Description

What is a rebuild and why would I need one?

  • A rebuild is the process whereby your personal computer's operating system (e.g., Windows 10/11, Mac OSX) is reinstalled so it is returned to the same state as when you first purchased it. Your data is backed up, the operating system is reinstalled, and your data is then restored.
  • A rebuild is intended to resolve software-related issues. A rebuild will not resolve hardware malfunctions, such as a failing hard drive. In the event of a failing hard drive on an out of warranty computer, you can purchase a new hard drive and IT can guide you through the installation of the new hard drive before starting the rebuild process.
  • A rebuild is a recommended way to resolve the following issues:

    • Blue screens (BSOD) related to software
    • Operating system problems
    • Viruses
    • Slow computer
    • New blank hard drive purchased

Computer rebuilds can either be completed by the student at no cost or by the Help Desk. As operating systems become more advanced, manufacturers are including easier methods to "reset" or "refresh" without professional assistance. Below, you will find a little more information for each option.

If the Help Desk Performs the Rebuild:

The rebuild process takes 2-3 business days to complete on a first-come, first-served basis. The length of time a rebuild takes is dependent on how much data there is to back up, what operating system is being reinstalled, and the possibility of complications that could arise. Complications include determination of hardware issues and corrupt or unreadable data. In regard to backing up data, the Help Desk makes every effort to back up and restore data (documents, music, pictures, videos, etc.).  There are, however, circumstances where IT is unable to back up data, including but not limited to:

  • Corrupt or unreadable hard-drive
  • Corrupt data
  • Unsaved files
  • Other hardware failures that would cause the data to be unreadable

After the rebuild is complete, users will need to reinstall any software that was previously installed. This includes Microsoft Office, antivirus, additional web browsers, etc. Microsoft 365 is available at no cost through Butler (How do I get Microsoft 365 for free? ).

If the Student Performs the Rebuild:

If you would like to perform a rebuild on your computer or if you would like more information on doing so, please consult with the Help Desk. The Help Desk provides instructions and guidance to students on how to complete a rebuild of their device (both PC and Mac).
