TitleWhat is KnowBe4?
Resolution Description

General Information:

KnowBe4 is the world's largest integrated platform for security awareness training combined with simulated phishing attacks. Cyber threats such as Phishing, Social Engineering, and Ransomware are not going away anytime soon; cybercriminals are looking for new ways to fool their victims into providing their personal information every hour, every day. KnowBe4 provides end-users with the tools and knowledge to combat these cyber threats in order to keep their personal information (as well as other users within our community's personal information) safe and secure.

What type of cyber threats should I be aware of?

What the platform includes:

  • Simulated phishing attacks
    • Where end-users put their training into practice.
    • Helps our community to gauge the security awareness proficiency of our end -users.
    • Allows us to measure our overall security culture posture.
  • Training Console
    • User-friendly interface for each individual end-user.
    • Easy to use and access.
    • Content relative to our current times.
  • Games, videos, slides, and bulletins
    • An array of different methods of training for our end-users.
    • Experience training that is current, relevant, and helps the end-user personally and professionally.

Butler University's Process on Security Awareness Training

  • Security awareness training is delivered to all users at the beginning of every semester. These training modules are mandatory for faculty and staff, with the request that all users participate.
  • Phishing simulations are conducted every semester to assist in training and identifying phishing emails.
  • Monthly digital signage posters are displayed to all campus as a means to communicate important security awareness topics in between training.
  • The Butler IT Security team will host in-person training, discussions, or Q&A's in partnership with any Butler department or organization as requested.

How does this help me?

In the 2019/2021 Fiscal Year, Butler University saw over 300 compromised accounts. Included in these compromised accounts were users who experienced financial loss from their personal accounts. Butler IT saw a significant need for our community to further our security awareness skills, and so KnowBe4 was implemented.  All users that access the internet or have any accounts online are susceptible and are targeted by cybercriminals whose job is to steal your information for financial gain.

With just one year of training, communities such as Butler can see a 70% difference in improvement with their end-users that are able to identify a cyber threat and stop it from going further.

2024 Cybersecurity reports average that around 1.4 million phishing sites are created every month.  These sites are designed to fool victims into believing it is a legitimate site. By doing so, a victim enters their personal information... providing it directly to the criminal.

The education sector is ranked second in the number of breaches due to phishing attacks or social engineering.

Universities possess massive amounts of data including personal info, making them tempting targets for cybercriminals.

Training in security awareness will protect you, your family, and our community. When one person falls victim to a phishing attack, a domino effect occurs and opens a door for cybercriminals to claim more victims.
