Resolution Description

What is ethernet?

Ethernet is a networking technology that connects your computer or gaming system by cable to a local area network (in this case, Butler's network) for high-bandwidth data transmission.

At Butler, on-campus residence hall rooms and apartments provide Ethernet ports for students.

Why use ethernet?

Since it’s a wired connection, ethernet typically provides higher speeds, lower latency, and greater security than Wi-Fi. Students who enjoy online gaming often prefer to use an ethernet connection over Wi-Fi to ensure there are no connection drops or interruptions.

What equipment do I need to use ethernet?

You must have access to an ethernet port. In Butler residence halls and rooms, there are ethernet ports in the wall. Your computer or gaming system must have an ethernet port. If it does not, you will need an ethernet port adapter. You must also have an ethernet cable (example below).

How do I connect to ethernet?

Ethernet is plug and play - just boop it in. Plug the ethernet adapter into the ethernet port and plug the other end into the desired device.
