All computers that are retired from Butler University’s inventory have their hard drives destroyed or securely erased. The computers and other equipment are then sold to to a local auction house. Proceeds from equipment sales are used to fund new equipment purchases and other university initiatives.
Why doesn’t IT allow me to purchase old devices?
Given the amount of time and effort required to prepare a device for individual resale, it is not economical for Butler to sell (or for individuals to buy) retired equipment individually. This process is not uncommon among other universities and large companies.
