Active vs. Concluded Courses:
A course stays “active” for 1 calendar year after the term’s end date. For example, a fall course that is finished being taught on 12/22/2020 will stay active until 12/22/2021 and then will become a “concluded” course. Once a course has concluded nothing can be altered in the course, it becomes read-only for both instructors and students.
Access:
While a course is still active, grades and content such as files, pages, assignments, quizzes, and discussions can still be altered. This is to assist with grade changes or incompletes that may mean a course needs to be accessible for an extended period of time.
Students can access both active and past courses by default unless you have restricted this in the course settings .
Interacting:
While a course is in the active state, grades and assignments can be altered by the instructor. This is the same for students, they can participate in a course as long as it remains in the active state, once it becomes concluded it becomes read-only for them as well. Content can be copied from concluded or active courses at any time.
It is possible to message students after a course term is over, however there are certain restrictions for this.
Locating Past "Concluded" Courses:
Only active courses will show on the dashboard. Instructors can view their All Courses list to see previous enrollments.
- Select Courses from the global navigation.
- Select All Courses.
- Scroll down to the Past Enrollments section.
Instructors can also customize the courses that appear on their Dashboard. Any active course marked as a favorite will appear on the Canvas Dashboard (past courses can't be made to show on your dashboard).
