TitleRingCentral SMS Text Message Guidelines
Resolution Description
Text messaging (SMS) is available within the RingCentral app for Butler faculty, staff, and affiliates upon request.

Butler faculty, staff, and affiliates using the text messaging (SMS) feature within RingCentral must agree to follow the CTIA messaging principles and best practices. The full text of these principles can be found here.

In practice, there are two main elements to compliance with the guidelines - consent and revocation of consent.

Before sending a text message for the first time to a non-Butler telephone number (any number which does not start with 317-940-XXXX), you must first obtain consent. Consent can be implied or written, depending on the circumstance.
  • You may provide your Butler telephone number to a consumer and inform them that your telephone number accepts text messages. If the consumer* initiates the text message conversation (they text you first), consent is implied and no further action is needed in order to proceed with sending text messages.
  • If you are initiating a text message conversation (the consumer has not texted you first), you must have written consent from the consumer stating they are willing to accept text messages.
  • Please note that it is NOT permissible at any time to use the text messaging feature within RingCentral to send unsolicited marketing messages.
*In this context, a "consumer" is anyone receiving text messages from you. This may be a Butler student, affiliate, parent, vendor, employee (on their personal number) or other individual.

Consumers must also have the option to revoke consent. If at any time an individual with whom you are communicating via text message within RingCentral states that they no longer desire to receive text messages (either by stating this directly, responding with STOP, etc.) you are required to honor this request and send no further messages.

Please note that each user is responsible for understanding and agreeing to these terms before utilizing the text messaging feature in RingCentral.
