Instructors using Zoom and Panopto inside of their Canvas courses can automatically transfer their Zoom cloud recordings to the Panopto course folder. The Zoom/Panopto integration is especially advantageous for recordings that need to be saved for a long period of time since Zoom cloud recordings are deleted after 28 days.
Once the Zoom recording is saved, instructors see the following in Panopto:
- *Gallery view video
- Participant list (saved in the video description)
- Chat messages (saved in Discussions)
- Transcript (saved in Captions)
For the integration to work, instructors
must schedule Zoom meetings through Canvas. Zoom meetings scheduled at zoom.butler.edu
cannot save automatically to Panopto, even when using the Canvas Import Meeting button.
*If you would prefer to limit the number of student faces that appear in recordings you can you can adjust your personal Zoom account Cloud Recording settings to not capture "Record gallery view with shared screen" and "Gallery View".
Instructions to adjust these Zoom settings.
Course Setup
- Provision Panopto in your course. See How to Provision Panopto in Canvas (Instructors).
- Add Zoom to your Course Navigation. See How do I add Zoom to Canvas? (Instructors).
Scheduling Meetings
- In Canvas, select Zoom from the Course Navigation.
- Select Schedule a New Meeting.
- In the meeting settings, ensure Record the meeting automatically and In the cloud are selected.

- Click Save.
Facilitate your meeting as usual. When you end the meeting, after a few minutes your recording will appear in the Panopto course folder which can be accessed by clicking
Panopto Recordings in the Canvas Course Navigation. Note that it may take additional time for the transcript/captions to be added to longer recordings.
Please note that no notifications will be sent when the Panopto recording is ready to view.
Turn Off Notifications from Zoom
Zoom sends out a email notifications for recordings uploaded to the cloud; meeting hosts will be notified when the Zoom recording link is available and when it will be deleted. Because this Zoom cloud recording is saved permanently in Panopto, many faculty prefer to turn off these Zoom emails.
- Log into zoom.butler.edu.
- From the left hand menu, select Settings.
- Select Email Notifications to jump to the notifications section or scroll down the page until you see the "Email Notifications" heading.
- Click the toggle for the When a cloud recording is available setting. (You do not need to do anything to save this change.)
- Click the toggle for the When the cloud recording is going to be permanently deleted from the trash setting. (You do not need to do anything to save this change.)
What records in a Breakout Room?
The Panopto/Zoom integration requires the instructor to record their Zoom meeting to the cloud. With cloud recordings, Zoom only records the
main room, i.e. no breakout rooms.
Instructors can
allow students to record their breakouts locally (to their own computers). Instructors can also ask students to
submit these recordings to Canvas if assessment or feedback is needed. Note that an assignment or discussion board must first be set up prior to student submissions.
