Instructors can download their Canvas courses to be used in other learning management systems (LMS) like Moodle, Blackboard, or D2L. Know that some content and course structures may not appear exactly as they did in Canvas, and some items may not appear at all.
Before downloading, please check your contract and intellectual property agreements with the university. Some online course design agreements, for example, do not allow you to reuse content outside of Butler.
Export a Canvas Course
Option 1: Download an Exported Course to Use in Another LMS
Canvas exports do not include grades, student submissions, or student interactions. Use the following documentation to export your course:
Make sure to save the export file to your computer or hard drive. You can now import this file into another LMS.
Option 2: Download an ePub File
You can download an ePub file of your Canvas course and upload it into any eReader software for viewing, such as iBooks or Azardi. If you have built your course using Canvas pages (rather than files), this may be a great option for you.
Similar to a course export, an ePub file does not include grades, student submissions, or student interactions. Any files that aren't supported in the ePub format, such as file attachments or PDFs, need to be downloaded separately.
To generate an ePub file, follow these steps:
Download Panopto Videos
After leaving Butler, you will not be able to manage your Panopto videos. We recommend downloading these videos if you would like to continue to use them. If you do not, they will be archived and deleted per
Butler's Panopto Retention Policy.
Free-for-Teachers Canvas Account
Some instructors prefer to store their exported course materials in a free-for-teachers Canvas course. These courses are not connected to an institution. They also do not have all of the features of Butler's Canvas and have other restrictions (e.g., size of course).
