Adding Superscripts and Subscripts
Both Canvas Studio and Panopto support subscripts and superscripts, but they must be entered as Unicode characters. (Word superscript and subscript buttons do not use Unicode, so if you try to past from Word, you will see the numbers display as regular characters.)
To add superscript and subscripts to your captions, you can look up the Unicode values and use your keyboard; for example, for a power of 2, hold ALT on a PC or Option on a Mac, type 0178, and release the ALT key. See
Unicode Superscripts and Subscripts for more information.
Superscript and subscript generators may be easier than looking up the codes; simply type the superscript or subscript text and copy/paste the result into your captions. Here are two such sites:
Tool Recommendation
Online Education and Educational Technology department recommends Panopto over Canvas Studio for accessibility considerations. One reason is that we have an integration with Panopto so we can outsource the captioning process when a student goes through SDS and needs captions. You are certainly welcome to caption the videos yourself, but we do have a service that can create the captions for you when there is a stated need for accommodations; these captions are not machine generated but are captioned and edited by a person to reach ADA compliance.
A second reason we recommend Panopto is that Panopto has more options for customizing captions. For example, students can change the size, position, and color of captions to fit their needs. The image below shows how superscripts will appear in the default settings of each tool, Studio on the left and Panopto on the right. Panopto captions can be enlarged one more level, too. Comparatively, Studio superscripts and subscripts are more difficult to read.

If Panopto is a better fit for you and your students, the Online Education and Educational Technology team can work with you to migrate your videos from Studio to Panopto. Email
