TitleHow can students watch a Panopto video with an embedded YouTube video on their mobile devices?
Resolution Description
Embedded YouTube videos do not play in the Panopto embedded player. The full interactive Panopto player must be used on a desktop in order to see these videos. Users have a couple of options for Panopto with embedded YouTube videos to ensure accessibility on mobile devices.

Post a Link to the YouTube Video

One option for mobile users is to post the YouTube video as a separate link in Canvas. Give your students using mobile additional instructions to pause the Panopto video, watch the YouTube video, and return to the Panopto video.

Record the YouTube Video

If you have not yet created your Panopto recording, you can play and record the YouTube video during your Panopto recording. Before recording, make sure to check off "Capture computer audio" under the audio settings in the Panopto Recorder in order to capture the audio from the YouTube video.

Create a Mock Playlist in Canvas

A mock playlist can be created in either a Canvas module or page. For this example, assume a Panopto video exists with two embedded YouTube videos. In the full interactive Panopto player (but not on mobile), the video plays in this order:
  • Panopto segment A
  • YouTube video 1
  • Panopto segment B
  • YouTube video 2
  • Panopto segment C
To recreate this for mobile viewers, follow these steps:
  1. Create three copies of the original Panopto video.
  2. Edit the first copy of the original Panopto video to only contain segment A, edit the second copy to only contain segment B, and edit the third copy to only contain segment C.
  3. In Canvas:
    • For modules, add the URL for Panopto segment A, then the URL for YouTube video 1, then Panopto segment B, etc. until the list of URLs resembles the correct play order.
    • For pages, embed Panopto segment A, then the YouTube video 1, then Panopto segment B, etc. until the list embedded videos resembles the correct play order.

Convert the YouTube Videos to Panopto Clips

If you own or created the YouTube video or the video is not copyrighted, the video can be converted from YouTube to Panopto.
  1. Contact the office of Online Education and Educational Technology (OEET@butler.edu) to help you convert the video from YouTube to Panopto.
  2. In the original Panopto video, add the former YouTube clip as a new Panopto clip inserted in the original. Reference How to Use Add a Clip to Splice Multiple Sessions Together for more details.
