Information

TitleGoogle Sign-in Error: "disallowed_useragent".
Resolution Description

Effective July 24th, 2023: Google will no longer be supporting "Sign in with Google" for requests coming from embedded webview libraries on Android and iOS applications. This is in effort of expanding their application of Google OAuth 20. policy.

What does this mean for Butler users?

Applications attempting to authorize access to Google within an embedded webview (webviews allow you to display web content inside a native app) could open Google and Butler University to "man-in-the-middle" attacks. This new policy will aid to increase protection for Butler users. Moving forward, users won't be able to sign in with their Google account or authorize access to Google APIs through apps using embedded webview libraries such as:
  • Android WebView
  • WKWebView on iOS
  • UIWebView on iOS

What's changing for users?

  • A user-facing warning message will appear in impacted sign-in attempts effective immediately.
  • Starting on July 24, 2023, users who try to sign in to their Google account from embedded webviews will not be able to sign in and will receive "disallowed_useragent" response.

What if a Butler user gets this message?

  • Users will need to contact the developer of the application. Developers are aware of this policy expansion and should be equipped to assist.
  • Users can try navigating to the website they are trying to log into in their system browser instead.
