TitleCan I reuse Panopto videos from semester to semester? (Instructors)
Resolution Description

Getting Student Permission to Share Recordings of a Live Class

According to FERPA rules, a recording with student audio or video maintained by an institution becomes an "educational record" of each student in the video. Therefore, if a professor desires to reuse a video in another course, they must first get permission from all students in the video before reusing the video.
  1. Share the FERPA Consent to Release Student Information Relating to Classroom Recordings form with students in your course.
  2. Collect permission forms from all students.
  3. Create a copy of the permission forms for your files.
  4. Submit the original forms to Registration and Records by emailing registrar@butler.edu.

Methods to Insert Videos into a Different Course

For live class sessions, first obtain permission from all students in the video. No permission is needed for self-produced lecture videos that only contain professor voice and presence.

Use the Canvas Course Import Tool

If you added Panopto videos using the Panopto LTI, Panopto videos will copy forward to your new course using the Canvas import tool and students will have the correct viewing permissions. You do not need to move the videos or change permissions. Note that videos must be inserted into the course using the Panopto LTI for this to work; for more information on how to insert videos using the Panopto LTI, see How do I add the same Panopto video to multiple classes? (Instructors)

Use the Panopto Course Copy Tool

Panopto's course copy tool allows faculty to copy an entire folder (including any subfolders) into a new course. The videos copy as reference copies; a video reference copy is an indistinguishable copy of an original Panopto video that refers to the original video’s streams, table of contents, captions, quizzes, and edits made in the video timeline but allows you to modify certain settings, such as the video’s name, folder, tags, description, owner, availability window, as well as settings for discussions, downloads, copyright, and sharing options. Learn more about reference copies.
  1. In your new or upcoming course, select Import Existing Content on the home page.
  2. Select Copy a Canvas Course from the dropdown.
  3. In the Search for a course field, type the name of your prior course. Select the course from the dropdown options.
  4. Click the radio button for All Content.
  5. Select Import.
  6. If Panopto was provisioned in your prior course, you will see a link for Panopto in your course navigation. Select Panopto Recordings in your navigation to provision the folder.
  7. Once the Panopto folder loads, select the Settings button.

  8. Under the Course Video Copy options, select Choose source folder.

  9. Select the Choose a folder dropdown and then select the appropriate folder. Note that Panopto will suggest the folder associated with the course you imported.
  10. Select Begin folder copy.
  11. Click OK to the confirmation popup.
  12. You will see a note saying, "A course copy job for this folder is currently in progress." The copy can take up to 24 hours so you will not see your videos right away.

Note: You can use Panopto's Course Copy tool without first importing content. Simply provision your Panopto folder and follow steps 7-12 above.

Move Videos Forward to the New Course

Moving videos to a new course folder will remove access from the original student group and grant access to the new student group. The new course must have a Panopto course folder provisioned before following these steps.
  1. Navigate to your course folder in Panopto.
    1. In Canvas, select Panopto Recordings from the course navigation.
    2. Select the Open in Panopto icon (square with arrow pointing to the top right).
  2. In the new window or tab, click the check boxes for each video that you want to move. Note that you may not see the checkbox until you hover over the video thumbnail.
  3. Select Move from the buttons at the top of the video list.
  4. In the Move session to field, enter in the new course folder.
  5. Select Move.
