As of February 28th, 2023: the total space shared by all users of Google Drive at Butler is more limited than was widely known, and Google will no longer permit Butler to exceed this total limit.
Is Google Workspace still supported by Butler IT?
While Google Drive presently remains a supported platform, Butler has adopted the Microsoft 365 platform as the officially designated system of choice for productivity and collaboration. Since 2020, the full suite of Microsoft tools including Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and others have been available to all Butler users, accessible from
Office.com or from the Microsoft Office applications installed on Butler computers.
How much storage do I have available in Google Workspace?
In an effort to avoid exceeding Butler's total allocated storage space in the future, a
1 Terabyte (1 TB, or 1000GB) per user quota has been added to all individual Butler Google Drive accounts and Shared Drives.
If you have a specific need for online file storage which exceeds 1 TB, please consider using Microsoft Teams or contacting IT for consultation. IT has worked with several campus departments with special storage needs to design viable solutions.
Can I continue to use Google Workspace for online storage?
All Butler users are strongly encouraged to default to the use of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams for file storage and collaboration. In addition to the synergy provided by greater adoption of the platform, Microsoft 365 also provides:
- Significantly greater file storage limits available (in Teams/SharePoint)
- Full control over sharing and access management internally and externally
- Additional security features, including enhanced data loss prevention
- Full and secure back up of all files
- Choice between the use of browser or desktop applications
- A standard chat platform that can be used to communicate with others at Butler
