What is Butler's Canvas Course Template?
The instructional design team at Butler has created a Canvas template to help instructors create quality courses regardless of their modality (online, hybrid, face-to-face). The full course template includes all the individual templates for each aspect of Canvas that an instructor might use. These include:
- Homepage
- Syllabus
- Course Schedule
- About the Instructor
- Course Navigation
- Course Resources
- Module Introduction
- Module Reading
- Instructor Content
- Assessment (Assignment, Discussion, or Quiz)
What is the value in using Butler's Canvas Course Template?
There are many benefits to using the course template, one of which is that it aligns with
Butler's Course Design Rubric. Following this rubric ensures your course is matching not only quality course design guidelines but also meeting HLC and other requirements. The template also creates consistency across courses as well as across programs and the entire university. This helps create a cohesive experience for students. Using one of the predesigned templates will also save you time formatting pages as most of that has been done for you already. Remember that these are just templates, so you are able to modify them for your specific needs.
Each template includes hidden editor notes that only people with edit access to a course (Teacher, TA, and Designer) can see when in the edit mode. The editor notes provide details on what should be included in that area of the template.

The full course template also includes examples of many of the pages fully built out so instructors can use them as an example to follow. These examples can be removed after the instructor has reviewed them or left in the course in an unpublished state.
How do I get access to to the template?
Contact the instruction design team at
designcat@butler.edu to have the entire template copied into a course. Each template page is also available if you
use DesignPlus.
Once you have access to the template, you can use
these guides to help edit them.
