Adding Non-Butler Users to Canvas
The adding of users from outside of Butler University is possible. This is done on a case-by-case basis because an account must first be created in Canvas for the user to get added to a course. Additionally, it needs to be determined if the course has students and whether or not the outside person will be interacting with those students within Canvas.
- If the user is being added to a course that only contains faculty and/or staff, an account will be created for the user and an alternative login website will be provided so that the user can bypass the Butler login page.
- If they are being added to a course that has students but will not be interacting with those students, they can be setup as an “Observer.” The Observer role will allow the user to see course content but not interact with the content or see any student submissions or data. These users will also be provided the alternative login page so that they can access Canvas without a Butler email address.
- If the user is being added to a course that contains Butler students and the user will be interacting with those students, the user must first become an affiliate (please contact HR for details) of Butler and agree to all policies governing having such access to students.
Please email OEET@butler.edu for these requests. We will add the account to Canvas and inform the user how to login to Canvas.
